Interior Decorating Sofa Fabrics and How to Choose the Best

    Tags:

You are in the market for new home decorating furniture and finally found the interior decorating sofa style that both you and your spouse are comfortable with, it’s in your price range and you both agree.

No easy feat! But, wait a minute the fabric won’t work.

Whether you are starting with an empty room or replacing the interior decorating sofa in a room that is already furnished, when looking for fabric, begin by asking a few questions.

Is this fabric appropriate for my lifestyle? What type of wear will my upholstery be getting? Will it be in the family room with small children, pets and a lot of activity? Or is it going in the living room that is primarily used on occasion for company. Where will the upholstery be placed? Would sunlight fade the colors and ultimately destroy the fibers? Will it resist stains, soil, and abrasion? How will the color look in my room’s lighting? How do I care for it?

The two primary things to keep in mind when choosing a fabric for an interior decorating sofa is the fiber content and how the fabric is woven. The finishing and coloring methods also affect the durability of a fabric.

By knowing a little about the fibers and fabric construction methods you will be able to make an informed choice that will meet the needs of you and your family.

There are three major classifications for the different fibers and each fiber will have unique wear characteristics.

The cellulosic fibers which are derived from plants include cotton, linen, and rayon. Wool and silk are protein fibers of animal origin, and many manmade polymers are derived from petrochemicals, resulting in nylon, olefin, and polyester.

Based on their characteristics, some fibers either used alone or blended of two or more will therefore be more appropriate on an interior decorating sofa than others.

    Properties of Fabric Fibers

Cotton is a natural fiber that dyes and prints well and is used in many upholstered applications. Cotton is very strong and durable but soils easily unless treated. Linen needs to be blended with other fibers or it can soil and wrinkle easily. It is resistant to sunlight and is made into draperies as well as upholstery. Rayon can be made to resemble silk, wool or cotton and is often used in blends with other fibers and the face fiber in velvets. Wool is a durable fiber that is exceptionally resilient. It is wrinkle and soil resistant, but is relatively expensive. Silk is a strong, resilient and long-lasting fiber, resists abrasion but has limited uses and is usually applied on high end goods. Nylon is a highly durable fiber, has remarkable resistance to abrasion, and resists stretching and wrinkling, but tends to pill. It is a very versatile fiber used to create velvets and woven fabrics. Olefin can be made to feel like wool. It is a highly durable fiber, almost equals nylon for strength. Olefin resists fading but is sensitive to heat and can be damaged by sunlight. Polyester is a strong and durable fiber that drapes well. It is resistant to abrasion and wrinkling. Polyester blends beautifully with other fibers and is used quite often to make cotton stronger. Widely used in upholstery fabrics.

The tightness of the weave, which is measured by the number of threads per square inch just like your sheets, is one way to measure of the durability of an upholstery fabric.

When you are contemplating a fabric to use on your interior decorating sofa for example, hold the swatch up to the window and see how much light comes through. The less light that shows through the tighter the weave.

Plain, decorative and pile, are some of the many categories of weaves commonly used to make upholstery fabrics.

The plain weave is strong, versatile and appropriate for many different fibers and blends of fibers. Chintz, chambray, and canvas are a few of the commonly known fabrics with a plain weave.

Jacquard or decorative weaves must be manufactured on specialized looms which translate complicated instructions into woven patterns. The jacquard loom attachment is capable of creating simple patterns, pictorial scenes and complex designs.

Fabrics commonly woven on the jacquard loom are brocade, damask and tapestries.

Pile weaves are constructed by adding extra yarns which are looped to the face of the fabric and then cut. Many different fibers are used to make velvets which have a low dense pile. Corduroy falls in this category, has ridges or cords in the pile and is a durable fabric.

The Big Surprise With a Sectional Sofa

    Tags:

Have you ever had a sectional sofa in your home? If not you are in for a big surprise. The sectional sofa that you can decorate your family living area with is one that is going to complete your style. You can find a sectional sofa that uses plants, animals, that is a solid color that will be made of stripes and even a sectional sofa that will be customized to match your drapes.

The sectional sofa is one that will be connected, connecting many seating areas in the home into one long area. The sectional sofa is one that can complete the home, giving all the family a place to sit, and that will be comfortable at the same time. Sectional sofas are now available for purchase online, and you can have them shipped directly to your home without delay. No need to go shopping and waste your gas, you can look at, review the photos, and find the materials that are going to meet your every expectation online.

The sectional sofa of your dreams can be found online. What you need to do is measure the wall where you are going to be putting the sectional sofa. The measurements will be how long of a space you have. The space should match the size of the sectional you are purchasing. What you need to be careful of is that you have wall that is just eight foot long, and the sofa is ten foot long. Measure and re-measure so you are sure that the couch is going to fit along the wall where you want it to fit. The sectional sofa is one that can be connected to a centerpiece that will then connect to another portion of the couch.

You can purchase a sectional couch that will be six foot, eight foot, ten foot and even up to sixteen foot long if you would like. Sectional sofas are designed to save space, and to create a huge feeling in that living space that you are decorating. Avoid using additional couches, loveseats or additional recliners with the sectional sofa that you purchase so you are maximizing your space in that living area. The living area that you want to decorate is going to be complete with the use of an end table or a corner table of the same type of material. You can often times purchase the corner table or the coffee table at the same time if you would like.

How to Care For Your New (and Existing) Sofa Or Suite

    Tags:

Like everything in the home caring for your suite will increase its longevity and ensure it looks its best. The following article provides a useful guide on getting the very best from your sofa or suite. Please read my other article for information on soft cover stain removal.

    Cleaning

Dust, dirt and grit should be removed frequently from your sofa or suite as this will affect its durability and the fabric colour. It’s worth considering that you would dust a wooden piece of furniture frequently because you can visibly see dust particles settling on it. Those same dust particles are continually settling on upholstery, and are often allowed to remain there, mainly because they are not visible.

Note: Remember to vacuum or brush your furniture frequently.

    Creasing

A common query about fabric is that over time it can crease on the arms and cushions. This is a natural feature and expected. Creasing doesn’t have any effect on a fabric’s wearing qualities. Acrylic pile velvets such as draylon type fabrics are by their very nature susceptible to creasing and should be considered normal.

Note: Creasing does not have any effect on a fabric’s wearing qualities.

    Cushions

Caring for your cushions is an essential requirement in caring for your sofa or suite, and it is recommended that they are turned and plumped where possible at least twice weekly. Many sofas today have fixed or non-turnable cushions. When this is not possible it is important to do what you can. Cushions turning will enable even wear and fading whilst plumping up cushions reduces the flattening effect on the cushions interiors. It is imperative that you consult professional cleaning specialists before seeking to wash any fabric or material.

Note: Plump up your cushions and consult a professional before cleaning.

    Spills and Stains

It goes without saying that you should always deal with spills immediately or at the earliest opportunity. The first step is to remove any excess with either white tissue paper or a soft absorbent cloth. For more information on cleaning instructions please refer to my article on “Stain Removal”. These instructions vary depending on the type of fabric.
    Note: Deal with spills immediately.

    Heat and Light

It is imperative that you never leave your furniture in direct contact or close to a heat source of any type. Radiators, open fires and fan heaters are examples of potential heat sources to consider. Sunlight can cause the fabric colour to fade over time, so it is important to avoid having furniture permanently in a window.

Note: Avoid placing your furniture next to a heat source or in direct sunlight.

    Wearability

The most likely area of wear on sofas and chairs are inevitably the arms. The sub-conscious body movement of rubbing hands back and forth over the arms’ surface can result in quite dramatic localised wear. It is worth considering that hands are quite acidic with a pH value in the region of 5.5.

Where it is possible the purchase of arm caps for your sofa or chair should extend the life of your furniture. It is not usually recommended that arm caps should be used with acrylic pile velvets such as draylon.

Note: Arm caps can extend the life of your sofa or chair

Extend the life of your furniture through common sense.

Do not allow animals in contact with you upholstery.

Do not allow children to stand on the seats or use them as a trampoline.

Avoid contact with sharp edges such as buckles, toys, rings, etc.

Do not sit on the edges of your seats as this will weaken the front edge of the spring unit (where applicable).

Avoid sitting on the arm of your furniture as it was not designed to take the full body weight and it may tip over.

Take care when vacuuming your carpet around the furniture and try to avoid contact as this may cause damage especially where the furniture has been fringed or skirted.

Avoid contact with lighted smoking materials.

Note: Using common sense will increase the life of your sofa or chair

    Leather

Leather is first and foremost a natural material which comes from the ox or cow. These animals over the course of their lifetime will inevitably come into contact with barbed wire fences, bramble bushes and possibly the horns of other cattle. Encounters such as these will result in scar tissue and scratches that will show on the finished leather product. These markings you should consider as conclusive proof of genuine leather and in no way detract from the wearing qualities. The areas of hide with scar tissue will in fact be tougher and more resilient to those without.

With the right care, leather improves with age, softening and moulding to the body’s contours. With antiqued leather the dark top is rubbed off after the leather has been applied to the frame, revealing a lighter colour underneath.

Other leather markings that can appear as natural characteristics in genuine leather are; stretch marks, scars, scratches, wrinkles and even insect bites.

Note: Every piece of genuine leather has its own story

    Leather Care

As with any furniture, atmospheric dust and dirt will land on the leather surface. This should be removed on a regular basis by taking a clean cloth, soaked in luke-warm water then wrung out before applying to the leather surface. (Never use detergent or spirit cleaner). Rinse with clean, cold water and wipe off with a dry cloth.

NOTE: Some hair dressings and creams can have an adverse affect on leather and care should be taken to protect the leather surface when such preparations are used.

Each type of leather will have its own individual care label. Please follow these instructions or contact the maker.

    Acrylic Pile Velvets - Draylon

Draylon is commonly referred to as a very durable and easy to clean product although is susceptible to crashing and pile pressure. These marks can be substantially by reduced with the aid of a soft brush and steam. Draylon is not washable as it usually has cotton backing which can shrink when soaked. The majority of plain draylon velvets are dry-cleanable and depending on level of usage should be cleaned annually. Printed draylon velvets with random print require careful cleaning. Accidental stains should be cleaned with a neutral shampoo and under no circumstances should dry cleaning solvents of any kind be used.

Note: It is imperative that this work is carried out by a professional upholstery cleaner.

With the correct care the longevity of your furniture will be extended. Should you encounter any spills please follow manufacturer guidelines. We recommend that any cleaning should be undertaken by a professional upholstery cleaning company.
